S Brian Adam's How Do How Do The Lovely Thing: a contemplative introduction by Stephen Gambello
When we close our eyes, inner
darkness consumes our sight. Our mind
forms thoughts more vividly, as there are no external distractions. As we open our eyes, but slowly, we see a
gradual construction of color, light and form.
We could see the underlying structuring (for structuring is
always an ongoing process) of things -- how form manifests and evolves visually
as light becomes more apparent.
S Brian Adam's life work seems to
embrace the imagery of the visible world, but holds to the underlying force and eternal base of
the prevalent invisible world: the
domain as the existence of the darkness, accessed by closed eyes.
The eyes open, and then they close: the experience of the transitioning of light and dark -- the process of
slowly opening eyes. We see a sliver of light emerge majestically from
darkness, then a haze, then objects become more pronounced; slowly closing the
eyes -- as we see things become dark, consolidated, the darkness consuming the
objects, as reality becomes a sliver of light being ingested into
darkness.
Slowly, but surely, opening and
closing the eyes: this is what I see as
I look at the life work of S Brian Adam.
S Brian Adam's offerings are the bridge between that which is seen and
unseen. If one takes time in fully
experiencing the deeply profound, yet peaceful, tranquility of closing and
opening eyes, slowly, gradually, naturally -- one understands the cycle of
existence.
The sunset is the closing of the
eyes of the daytime. The sunrise is the
opening of the eyes of the daytime.
Nighttime is the time of sleep, of dreams, of direct connection to the unnameable, to the abstraction of nothingness, the realm of pre-birth and
ultimately, pre-creation....
The cycle of birth (sunrise), life
(daytime) and death (sunset), as well as the that which is mysterious
otherness: unification of life (night-sleep):
this is what we experience as we close the eyes, open the eyes, remain
with eyes closed...
To accept this simple, yet
enlightening action: to revere, to acknowledge, to contemplate the open-closed eyes experience: we learn the powerful process, the
structuring of the life work known as How Do How Do The Lovely Thing....
I close my eyes: How -- I open my eyes: Do... I
close my eyes: How -- I open my eyes: Do
The
Lovely Thing: that which is the result of the close/open
eye reflection/veneration/contemplation... experience : self ....
